One player's soul slots with their names and highest ranks. The Leader's altar is at the back, the rank-0 slots face the rift. The Codex uses these names in its examples.
  1. 4.1.1

Each player has fifteen soul slots: the Leader's altar and fourteen more. They are laid out as a tree with the altar at its root.

  2. 4.1.2

Every slot shows a number, the highest rank a Soul on it may have.

    1. The altar and the slot straight in front of it are rank 3.
    2. Two rank-2 slots stand left and right of the altar, and one more in front of the central rank-3 slot.
    3. Rank-1 and rank-0 slots fan out towards the front; the rank-0 slots sit furthest out, at the rift, facing the opponent.
  3. 4.1.3

Each slot except the altar hangs from exactly one slot nearer the Leader. That slot is the one "directly above" it. The tree decides who commands whom (5.1).

  4. 4.1.4

A slot holds at most one Soul. A captured Soul still occupies its slot (14.5.2).

  5. 4.1.5

Armaments and Ambushes have no slots of their own. An Armament lies under its Soul; an Ambush lies at the soul slot where it was set (10.4.4).

  6. 4.1.6

Cards call a soul slot a Soul Spot. Both words mean the same place.

4.2The other places

  1. 4.2.1

Three realm slots beside the tree, of rank 1, 2 and 3. Each holds one Realm.

  2. 4.2.2

One event slot. An Event lies there while it resolves; while it is taken, no other Event can be cast (10.2.3).

  3. 4.2.3

The Elysium, a face-up pile. Resolved Events and Ambushes, discarded cards and the Armaments of captured Souls go there. Both Elysiums are public.

  4. 4.2.4

The Exile, a face-up pile for exiled cards. Nothing comes back from the Exile. Both Exiles are public.

  5. 4.2.5

The deck, face down, and the hand. There is no limit to the number of cards in a hand.
